Tibetan face up to the AIDS challenge

DHARAMSHALA, December 1: Tibetans in the exile seat of Dharamshala today joined the global call for “Getting to zero,” the theme for World AIDS Day 2011.

Leading the day-long activities as part of the World AIDS Day commemoration was Dharamshala based NGO, CHOICE HIV/AIDS Initiative.

2nd Comprehensive workshop/Training/ Networking on HIV/AIDS in Phendeling Tibetan Settlement, Mainpat, Chhattisgarh - India.

The need of tackling the rate of HIV infection among Tibetan refugee communities in India and Nepal is immense. CHOICE—HIV/AIDS Initiative, since its inception, has been working consistently in providing preventive and educational workshops, peer counseling, and financial help/assistance for those living with HIV/AIDS under “Adopt an HIV Family” program.

First-ever Interactive Workshop for the Tibetan People Living with HIV/AIDS (TPLHA)
March 30 & 31, 2011 – McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, H.P. India
(Organized jointly by Dept of Health, CTA & CHOICE—HIV/AIDS Initiatives)

The First ever Interactive Workshop for the Tibetan People Living with HIV/AIDS (commonly termed TPLHA) concluded successfully on March 31, 2011 here at McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, H.P. The participants for the conference were from the Tibetan settlements of Mundgod Duegoling, Mainpat Phedeling, Bylakuppe Dicky Lharso, Dolangji Bhonshi and Dharamshala. The Workshop  was jointly organized by Department of Health, CTA and CHOICE-HIV/AIDS Initiative.

Advance Training on Prevention of HIV/AIDS, Delhi Nov. 1 - 8, 2010

Dharamshala: The Department of Health of the Central Tibetan Administration facilitated and supported a week-long advanced training on prevention of HIV/AIDS organised by Dharamsala-based NGO 'CHOICE-HIV/AIDS Initiatives' in Delhi from 1 – 8 November. The training was funded by St Stephen’s AIDS Trust (SSAT), London and co-ordinated by SAHARA Center for Residential Care & Rehabilitation, Delhi, the organisers said in a statement.

Tibetan delegation at XVIII International AIDS Conference, July 18 – 23, 2010 – Vienna, Austria

A Tibetan delegation comprising of Mr. Choepe Paljor Tsering (Health Minister), Central Tibetan Administration, Tibetan Govt. in Exile and Mr. Phuntsok Chomphel (Project Officer, CHOICE—HIV/AIDS Initiative) representing the only Tibetan run NGO on HIV/AIDS, attended for the first time ever, the weeklong XVIII International AIDS Conference 2010 at Vienna, Austria. The theme of the Conference was RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW and was held from July 18 – 23, 2010.

Tibetans living in New York City came together on March 20 to raise fund for the CHOICE - HIV/AIDS Initiative which undertakes HIV/AIDS awareness program and provides care and support to the Tibetan people living with HIV/AIDS (TPLHA).
